Presentation to NAMI in
Fort Wayne – June, 2017
Hello,
and welcome to the Carriage House and National Alliance on Mental Illness here
in Fort Wayne.
I say “Welcome to the
Carriage House” because you see, this wonderful agency, this facility belongs
to me – and it belongs to every mentally ill man and woman who walks through
these doors. Thanks to you.
I am here for a very serious reason tonight.
You see, my reason
for being here tonight is not me or my mental illness, I’m here to talk to you,
about you. About you, democracy and our national traditions of fairness,
justice and the American dream.
Statistically,
I can be certain that some of you in this room tonight, (even though you have a
mentally ill friend or family member), some of you voted for Donald Trump and
Vice President Michael Pence.
I am my Father’s son,
and I am a Patriot and have tried to be a good citizen all my life (even during the bad years, the years of crime and addiction), but I did not vote for President Trump, nor
have I ever voted for Vice-President Michael Pence for Governor or any other political
office.
I will say this -
whether we talk about my behavior or my votes, for my entire life to the best
of my abilities, I have been an American Patriot. I am a proud citizen of the United States of America.
Each morning, my Father (a world-war II veteran) would walk out onto our driveway and put up the American flag. Each evening we would bring that flag down and fold it - ready for the next morning.

Dear friends here at
NAMI, regardless of who you voted for, I’m sure you are aware of the
catastrophic changes being proposed in the new Republican “Health Care
Plan”.
People – Please listen.
Do not close your minds and hearts. Hear me now.
The
Trump/Senate/Republican plan is NOT a health care proposal. It is a gigantic
tax cut masquerading as a health care program.
This bill is a spending-slashing sleight of hand that strips millions of
Americans of their basic rights and liberties.
This healthcare plan is
a thinly-veiled massive tax cut for the absolute elite, people who are already
wealthy beyond any rational need or social purpose. Those who will
benefit are not "job creators," these are trust-fund children and
grandchildren, the elite, the educated, smooth of skin and pampered beyond any
of our dreams.
These cuts that are proposed steal the money for these tax cuts from the pockets and the lives and the dreams and hopes of the poor, the elderly and the most vulnerable and least able citizens of this once proud nation.
Please - I beg of
you Think. Put yourself in the shoes of the retired, the
insane, the ill and the unemployed. Please, take a moment and think about
them and their lives.
I must tell you that I believe most people in Indiana and indeed here in the United States have voted for a uniquely selfish group of men and women who serve in the majority in Washington. It isn't fair, it isn't right, and at least in my opinion, it is not patriotic.
Votes matter. Even in a nation of paid-for politics, votes still matter.

PLEASE IN THE NAME OF
FAIRNESS, EQUALITY AND HUMAN DIGNITY - NEVER VOTE FOR THESE PEOPLE AGAIN.
Don’t do it for me – do
it for yourself, and for your own reputation, your self esteem, your children
and for your everlasting souls. Do not continue to vote this way, think
this way, and force our great nation into a Hell of damnation and despair.
Call your
representatives and join me – And please, God in Heaven, never vote for such
men again.

About John Hubertz:
John Hubertz is a disabled adult and has lived in or had
family connections with Northeast Indiana since 1963. He currently resides in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
John Hubertz has a rare
form of bipolar disorder that is termed “hypo manic” – what in classical
clinical descriptions is called a “maniac”. Unlike most who suffer from
this illness John is nonviolent and rarely poses a risk to himself or others,
and his illness is responsive to appropriate therapy and medication. John
has been mentally stable and receiving Park Center services since 2002, and
discovered the Carriage House clubhouse in 2004.
John is a past member of
the board of directors of the Carriage House clubhouse in Fort Wayne. He
holds degrees from Purdue University and Miami University at Oxford Ohio, as well as a Doctorate from the Baptist Seminary of the West in Divinity and Theology.
John is a published author, a nationally recognized public speaker, and is in Who’s Who (1984 – 1986).

John’s working career
prior to his diagnosis was as a communications specialist and field service
manager for the Ford Motor Company. He suffered a severe breakdown and
associated issues of substance abuse beginning in 1996. He was homeless
on the streets of Detroit, Michigan from 1996 till 1998.
John has been arrested
numerous times, and has two felonies. One is a DWI, the other was due to
stealing a bus (and keeping it). John’s mental illness was finally
diagnosed at Westville Penitentiary in Indiana in 1999 after he was forced to become
sober due to incarceration.
Due to addiction and his
mental illness, Mr. Hubertz experienced 7 separate voluntary substance abuse
rehabilitation events beginning in 1989, but he could not remain sober as
without alcohol and drugs his mania would express itself and make his life
impossible.
John is a published
author, and writes extensively on issues of politics, religious philosophy and
theology. He writes several blogs – many of which are “tuned” to his
various mood states.
John is an ordained
Deacon and is a practicing Roman Catholic in the Reform Roman Catholic
Church. John is also ordained in the faith of Buddhism. John is also a Foundational Elder, Pastor and Deacon in the New Hope Church which is an international faith that was founded in Fort Wayne several years ago.
The founders of New Hope are John Hubertz, Michael Benedict, Rabbi Avram Friedman and the blessed Carl Zehr - an anabaptist scholar who lived in Grabill Indiana until his death a little over three years ago.
New Hope currently has over 11,000 members active in over 20 countries - and includes people of every major faith.

John is currently
working with the Allen County Amish community and is writing steadily - he is the Dean of Students and coordinates the creation of workshops and lessons for the Seminary program at New Hope, and writing articles on the subjects of faith, peace and comparative theology. John has also just begun a new book project that is a collection of brief essays that map the arc of his life, learning and personal philosophy of non-violence and multi-cultural respect.
